Training course. In the field of olive crop management

The Agricultural Research Station in the Northern Highlands conducted a training course today for 24 farmers and representatives of agricultural associations in the Sana'a Basin region. The training aimed to familiarize participants with the agricultural and productive characteristics of the olive crop, specifically focusing on the varieties that have been proven to adapt and thrive in several agricultural areas in the Northern Highlands.

This course was organized in response to the farmers' need for knowledge and expertise in managing the olive crop, which is relatively new to the Yemeni agricultural community. The course covered topics such as cultivation requirements, proper management practices, and the necessary procedures to ensure optimal utilization of the olive fruit.

The Research Station for the Northern Highlands collaborated with the Sana'a Basin Project to organize this training course, which included lectures delivered by Engineer Mohammed Al-Moushki, a specialized researcher in olive tree cultivation and care. The importance of adopting and expanding olive cultivation in Yemen was highlighted due to its economic and nutritional significance, as it is a resilient crop that can withstand environmental stresses.

The participants were also advised on the importance of selecting reliable and certified nurseries for obtaining quality olive seedlings. Additionally, attention was given to the importance of implementing a comprehensive maintenance program and improving orchard management, especially during the early stages, flowering, fruit setting, and harvesting.

Dr. Yasser Al-Joufi, a researcher specializing in post-harvest practices, explained proper methods for fruit harvesting and post-harvest procedures, including techniques for fermentation, oil extraction, and preservation. These techniques were demonstrated practically during the training.

Given that the olive crop is relatively new to the Yemeni agricultural community, which lacks experience in its management, cultivation requirements, and utilization, this training course aimed to provide valuable knowledge and skills to benefit from the crop effectively.
